Media File Recovery

Having to use media file recovery should be a rare event. Unfortunately, digital flash memory cards are not bullet-proof, and you can still lose your pictures almost as easily as with regular film. There are so many things that can cause physical damage to storage media.

What are the types of Media File Recovery formats

When I talk about media files, we are including media file recovery of image and video files of different formats: JPEG, TIFF, RAW Image files, like Canon CRW, Nikon NEF, Kodak DCR and others and various video files – AVI, MOV, MPG and MPEG. These are typically stored on usb drives, compact flash, smart media, iPod, secure digital card, multimedia card, memory card, dongle, xD cards and flash memory.

What causes Media File Recovery Problems

Digital Cameras contain a full operating system that handles Input/Output operations on a FAT based file system. If your digital camera storage media is corrupt and you may get the message "Media is not formatted".

In digital cameras, one single corruption in the FAT (File Allocation Table) can cause your camera to ignore valid data that follows. Some cameras become confused when structures different from what they expected or are unable to switch safely from FAT-12 to FAT-16. When this happens fat recovery software is an option.

Recovery Data Issues

Your camera's simple operating system may not be able to handle the perfectly normal situations created by a sequence of file deletion, creation and moves under it’s operating system. For example, this can happen simply when you shut down your camera at the wrong moment. . If you accidentally remove a memory card from a card reader or a camera during the write operation, the result may be a corrupted file.

Additional Disk Recovery Issues

Another common situation is to see cameras "wrap their writes around" when they don't realize they have reached the end of the card. This causes the erasing critical system structures located at the beginning of the media making system recovery necessary.

You can recover your precious photos and videos even after your digital camera media has been formatted, corrupted or unreadable. Most digital cameras do not wipe photos from your storage media when you delete photos or use the format command and there are various media files recovery programs available to assist with retrieving your files.
